About the Conference
The National ID Conference
The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) as an institution is responsible for establishing a strong, inclusive, and secure foundational, digital identification system and secure database of personal identities by providing a unique identification number for every citizen and legal resident in Somalia. This conference is organized by NIRA in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation. The Conference is scheduled to take place on September 16-17, 2023 at the Hanger in Mogadishu, Somalia and the theme is titled, "Laying the Foundation for a Trusted National ID." The National ID conference aims to gather top officials of government leaders, relevant institutions, stakeholders, international partners and funders. The primary goal is to cohesively shape Somalia's identification infrastructure in order to enhance public and private services. Additionally, the conference also serves to establish a collaborative forum and build a community of practitioners, users and stakeholders together to shape the future of Somalia’s identification ecosystem.
Conference Objectives
The specific Objectives of the conference are to:
• Create awareness and a sense of community ownership for the Somalia National ID system:
• Forge strong relationships with the Somali private sector that relies on the Somali National ID as the basis of its KYC requirements
• Streamline the National ID System with public sector initiatives in order to improve access to services
• Engage the international community and other partners on the continuous development of the Somali Identification ecosystem
